NEWSLETTERNovember 2005 NEWSLETTERThursday November, 17 Is The Great American Smoke Out November Is Diabetic Eye Disease Month THURSDAY NOVEMBER, 17 IS THE GREAT AMERICAN SMOKE OUTIf you’ve been thinking of quitting smoking, try it for just one day. If you are successful for one day try it for the next. The smoke out has helped bring about dramatic changes in Americans’ attitudes about smoking. It started in the 1970’s in California when the state’s Division of the American Cancer Society successfully prompted nearly one million smokers to quit for the day. It went nation wide the following year. Since that time many states and local governments have banned smoking in workplaces and restaurants, raised taxes on cigarettes and limited advertising. Because of these laws there has been a decrease in smoking and fewer people are dying of lung cancer. Smoking is responsible for 1 in 3 cancer deaths, and 1 in 5 deaths from all causes. Another 8.6 million people are living with serious illnesses caused by smoking. For more information visit the American Cancer Society web page about quitting smoking, improving your health or getting involved in the Great American Smoke Out.
